The Guy in the Bus

by Sarah
(UK)

One sunny day in August me and my friends went to a local music festival, I left the festival early because I had an appointment later in the day. My friends walked me to the bus stop and waited with me untill the bus arrived, we waved good bye and I sat in the spaces near the back. A couple of stops into the journey I noticed a guy sitting at the front of the bus, you could see that he was mentally disabled and was pretending a tiger toy was real and giving it a voice.

There were people sat behind him who he was trying to talk to but after some minuets they walked away and sat at the back near me. I could hear them complaining about the guy at the front, they were being really nasty.

I sat and thought to myself for a few stops, I waited to see if anyone else would talk to him. I didnt want the people to laugh or make fun of me for talking to him but I didn't like leaving him on his own.

After a while I got up and walked the the front of the bus. I sat next to him and introduced myself, we had an amazing conversation and even found out that he goes to the church my youth group is at - he got off the bus before me and I felt on a high the rest of the way home.

I'm glad I made the choice I did, it made both of us feel good.

Well Done!!

Sara,

Thank you for your display of courage in deciding to engage the gentleman in kindness and conversation. You also set an example for the other passengers and the driver. Due to your thoughtfulness, I bet they will think twice when they encounter another occasion like what they experienced on the bus. God bless you!

It doesn't take much to make mentally handicapped people happy. You did a very good thing and maybe someone will read this and follow your example.
